The father of two Nesquehoning residents died on Saturday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest Campus, of injuries he suffered in an electric bicycle accident that happened at 7:44 p.m. Sept. 28 in Kline Township.
The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office said Joseph D. Planutis, 53, of Kelayres, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The manner of death was ruled accidental, caused by head trauma from the crash, the coroner’s office said.
Planutis was the father of Julia M. Planutis and Joseph J. Planutis, both of Nesquehoning.
State police at Frackville investigated the crash and said Planutis was operating the electric bike southbound on Fourth Street in the township when it left the road and struck a utility pole.
Police said he was initially transported by the McAdoo Fire Company Ambulance Association to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazleton.
A son of the late Joseph J. and Janet M. (Reinmiller) Planutis, the deceased was the brother of Barbara, wife of Michael Malloy of Beaver Meadows. He was a custodian for the Hazleton Area School District.
