PV Spirit Week

The Pleasant Valley School District is currently celebrating Spirit Week.

A bonfire was on the schedule for 5 p.m. today at the middle school. Thursday is the Bucket Game, while a trunk-or-treat event is planned for 4-6 p.m. Friday at the intermediate school.

Grief support

St. Luke’s Hospice Bereavement Program is available tonight from 6-7:30 p.m. in the form of a virtual 90-minute workshop.

Missions dinner

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, holds a West End Missions dinner the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 4:30. This month, they are Thursday and Oct. 23.

Eldred Twp. budget

Budget meetings for Eldred Township are set for 5 p.m. Thursday and 5 p.m. Oct. 23. The meetings are open to the public.

Church fundraiser

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effort, is holding a rummage and bake sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The kitchen will be open for lunch, and baked goods will also be sold.

Fall festival

The Monroe County Conservation District is hosting a Friday Night Fall Festival from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center. It will include crafts, games, nighttime adventures and a hike. The evening will be capped off with s’mores and stories around the campfire,

Participants are encouraged to dress in a fall theme or wear a Halloween costume.

Sportsmen’s Day

The Kunkletown Rod & Gun Club is hosting a Sportsmen’s Day on Sunday, with doors opening at 11 a.m. The public is welcome.

Tickets will have 33 prizes, plus two door prizes and refreshments from 12:30-4 p.m.

Raffles will be ongoing throughout the day. The club is located at 122 Gun Club Lane in Saylorsburg.

Display opens

Artists Claudia Hill of Brodheadsville and Joan Lech of Lehighton are having their work featured at the Kettle Creek Art Gallery from Saturday through Oct. 31. People can meet the artists at the gallery from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

“From Nature to Art” will be on display during gallery hours: Monday to Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Oct. 25 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

There is no charge for the program. Preregistration is not required.

Local poker run

Bikers for Sight is holding a run through the Pocono Mountains to benefit Sights for Hope. All motorcycle clubs are welcome.

The run will start in Tannersville at Pocono Mountain Harley-Davidson and feature several stops before concluding at Blue Ridge Estate Vineyard & Winery, Saylorsburg.

Museum open

The Ross Township Historical Society Museum at 258 Anchorage Road in Saylorsburg will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

All are invited.

The museum is free of charge and all are welcome.

Night at the Races

The Knights of Columbus at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church are holding a Night at the Races on Saturday, beginning at 6 p.m.

There is a cost, which includes all food.

Adults are allowed to BYOB.

Donations of desserts and raffle prizes are accepted.

Soup sale

Effort UMC has announced its next soup sale. October soups are pork and cabbage with vegetables and cream of broccoli with cheese.

Orders will be taken through Oct. 22. Pickup date is Oct. 27.

Laity Sunday

St. Peter’s UMC, Saylorsburg, will celebrate Laity Sunday during its 9 a.m. worship service. Fellowship will follow at 10:15 a.m. The Charge Conference will begin at 12:15 p.m.

Chicken barbecue

Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company, Kresgeville, is hosting a chicken barbecue Sunday. Pickup time is 2-4 p.m.

Community supper

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is hosting a Community Sunday Supper this month. It will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

AA meeting

Although Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, is closed for Columbus Day on Monday, the AA group will meet there at 7:30 p.m. as usual. The second weekly meeting is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Tuesday meeting

Operation: Touch of Home will be meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert.

Free supper

Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, is again hosting its free drive-in community supper. It begins at 5 p.m. Oct. 15.

Bog Day

The Tannersville Bog Stewardship Committee, along with The Nature Conservancy, is sponsoring the annual Bog Day on Oct. 19.

Featured will be guided walks on the boardwalk as well as information on the bog and light refreshments.

The free walks are at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Registration is required; call 570-629-3061. People should wear appropriate footwear for the walks. Meet at the Tannersville Bog parking lot at 552 Cherry Lane Road, East Stroudsburg.

Tools needed

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is seeking tools, including new power drills, batteries and hammers, as the group is currently repairing 30 homes in Monroe County. There are more than 90 homes on the waiting list.

Rebate reminder

The deadline for Property Tax/Rent Rebate for applicants 65 or older, widows/widowers 50 or older, or 18 or older with a disability has been extended to Dec. 31.

The amount to be issued is based on the applicant’s annual income, which must have been $45,000 or less in 2024.

Medicare enrollment

Monroe County Area Agency on Aging reminds people that the annual open enrollment period for Medicare will run from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

Trained counselors for the county’s several senior centers are available at no cost.

The West End’s Senior Center is at Zion Lutheran Church.

Seniors with questions can call 570-420-3735 to set up an appointment.

No classes held

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is not holding religious classes on Sunday.

The classes will resume Oct. 19.

Voting reminder

Oct. 20 Is the last day to register to vote in 2025 municipal elections, which are Nov. 4.

Voters can register at their county elections office, by mail or by visiting www.pa.gov. The last day to request an absentee or mail-in ballot is Oct. 28.

Trunk or treat

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will host a trunk-or-treat event from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the church parking lot.

The church is asking its folks if want they want to host a trunk. If so, call the church office at 610-681-6137.

Also, wrapped candy is needed; it can be dropped off at the office.

Autumn dinner

Effort UMC has announced its roast pork and sauerkraut dinner from 4-6:30 p.m. Nov. 1.

The meal will include roast pork lion, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, applesauce, roll, homemade desserts, coffee, tea and other beverages.

Children under 2 may eat for free. For other costs, depending on age, call the church office at 570-629-1890. The church is handicapped accessible.

Food event

St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effort, is having a Taco & Grub Food Truck event at the church from 11 a.m. until the food runs out on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

The church will also be having a bake sale that day.

Donation days

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is holding donation drop-off days for its second annual Christmas sale and basket raffle being held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 14 and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 15.

Drop-off days for all Christmas items, including new and gently used toys, will be Oct. 31, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; and Nov. 1, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the church pavilion.

Donations can also include such items as ribbons, cellophane, baskets, lotto tickets and gift cards.

Food items are needed such as soda, water, shredded sharp cheese, half-and-half, broccoli florets, ketchup, mustard and apple cider.

Nominations open

Nominations are now being accepted for the Helen G. Brown Award, which is presented annually by the Monroe Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council.

The award goes to a person or organization that has contributed to a program of excellence that enhances the quality of life of county seniors.

Criteria include: Monroe County resident or group; significant contribution between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2024; program of excellence established on a volunteer basis.

The deadline for submission is Oct. 31.
