Man charged with firing shots, drunkenness
A Lehighton man has been charged with firing shots Tuesday afternoon in the borough.
Lehighton Borough Police Department Cpl. Bruce Broyles said police responded at 5:45 p.m. to the 300 block of South Second Street for a report of a man walking in the backyards carrying a rifle.
As officers approached the area, they were updated that Carl Lloyd Miller, 71, had just discharged the firearm.
Officers arrived and were immediately met by local residents who confirmed that Miller had discharged what was said to be a hunting rifle.
Officers encountered Miller in the backyards, still in possession of the rifle. Miller complied with verbal directions to place the weapon on the ground and display his hands.
Miller was taken into custody without incident.
No injuries were reported.
Officers recovered a Remington Arms model 760 rifle, which was still loaded with four live rounds.
One spent rifle casing was also recovered from the scene which matched the rounds still in the rifle.
Evidence was found that Miller discharged the rifle into a neighbor’s pool causing damage.
Miller was found to be under the influence of alcohol during the time of the incident.
Lehighton Borough Police Chief Troy Abelovsky shared additional remarks in a post on the police department’s Facebook page.
“There have been reports which indicate the male offender was specifically targeting a facility or local business in the borough,” Abelovsky said. “Through the police investigation, there was no evidence to suggest that the offender in this incident was targeting any one specific location.”
Abelovsky added that the Lehighton Police Department would like to thank the Pennsylvania State Police who arrived on scene and assisted taking the offender into custody without incident.
He noted that Franklin Township and Mahoning Police Departments also responded to assist.
Miller has been charged with recklessly endangering, simple trespasser, public drunkenness and criminal mischief.
