Lansford man charged after resisting arrest, kicking cruiser window

A Lansford man faces charges after an alleged fight with his girlfriend and a neighbor late Saturday followed by a struggle with state troopers who came to investigate.

Matthew Prestol, 27, of East Bertsch Street, was arraigned Sunday by District Judge Beth Dodson on charges of aggravated assault, two counts; simple assault, resisting arrest, institutional vandalism, harassment, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

He was jailed in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $200,000 bail.

According to court papers, state police responded to a home on East Bertsch Street for a fight in progress, and made contact with a woman, who said that her boyfriend had just left the scene.

Her face had red swelling and was bloody, and she told police that she had an argument with Prestol, who punched and pushed her. A neighbor who witnessed the fight attempted to intervene also had facial injuries, including a broken lip and teeth, court papers said.

Police located Prestol, who was walking away, and attempted to place him in handcuffs. He complied but was verbally resistant, court papers said. Prestol angled his body, as if he was going to spit, and then pulled away from the trooper, court papers aid.

Prestol began to resist, kicking at police when they attempted to place him in a patrol vehicle. One of three troopers shut the door, and Prestol kicked at the window, court papers said.

Police removed him from the vehicle and attempted to use a department full body restraint system, and Prestol was told to stop resisting but did not comply. Police eventually subdued him, court papers said, and placed him in a patrol vehicle.

Prestol told troopers upon arrival at the barracks that he denied hitting his girlfriend, but did beat up his neighbor, court papers said.
