Carbon County’s second in command in the adult probation office is set to retire at the end of this month, leaving the department with no chief or deputy chief.
Last Thursday, the board of commissioners acknowledged the upcoming retirement of Joseph J. Berke of Walnutport, the deputy chief adult probation officer. He retires on Oct. 1 after 37 years of county employment.
This action comes on the heels of the resignation of Janene Holter, chief adult probation officer, last month.
District court administrator Kelly Hamm said Friday afternoon in an email regarding the interim leadership of the department that until President Judge Roger Nanovic selects a new chief adult probation officer, probation officers Joseph Bettine and Kimberly Cooper will work with Hamm in overseeing the operation of the adult probation office.
No time frame has been given as to when a new chief or deputy chief will be named.
The two positions are posted on the Carbon County website.
The chief position rate ranges between $75,000 and $80,800 annually; while the deputy chief position salary is set at $36.27 per hour.
