Tamaqua looks at conducting traffic study for routes 209, 309

A study that will look at traffic in the borough of Tamaqua may soon happen.

According to Tamaqua borough Councilwoman Kathy Kunkel, council’s Parking and Traffic Committee met recently.

“We were talking about traffic issues in town, and the increase in 18-wheelers and through-traffic,” she said.

During the discussions, she said, members brought up getting a traffic study underway.

“We were worried about the cost,” Kunkel explained.

In the meantime, Kunkel said the committee learned that PennDOT’s Local Technical Assistance Program will undertake the study at no cost.

Kunkel said the committee plans to arrange a meeting with LTAP officials.

The study will look at traffic on routes 209 and 309, along with some “feeder streets” to those state roads.

The last time the borough had a traffic study was in 2002.

Also during the recent meeting, council:

• Received an invitation from the Tamaqua American Legion to attend the Tamaqua Veterans Day Parade beginning at 10 a.m. Nov. 8.

“I wish our Veterans Day parade would get as many people as our Halloween parade,” council President Brian Connely said.

• Granted permission to the Tamaqua Area Faith Fellowship Network and the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership to hold the annual Hunger Walk beginning at 2 p.m. Nov. 2 from the Tamaqua Arts Center.

• Accepted the resignation of Hans Shinton from the Tamaqua Board of Health.

-Approved a handicapped parking space application for 318 Arlington St.

• Adopted an ordinance banning parking on the north side of East End Avenue between Elizabeth and Laurel streets.
