S. Hill man charged with explosive devices

A Summit Hill man is jailed without bail after being found with an explosive device referred to as a “half-stick” following a report of a protection from abuse violation in the borough.

Joseph Kosalko Jr., 45, was arraigned Tuesday by District Judge Joseph Homanko in Weatherly on a charge of weapons of mass destruction, and committed to the Carbon County Correctional Facility in Nesquehoning. Bail is not provided for the charge.

According to court papers, Summit Hill police responded to a report of a protection from abuse order in the 200 block of West Ludlow Street on Sunday just before midnight.

The victims told police that Kosalko attempted to gain access to the residence and then fled on a motorcycle.

Kosalko was located minutes later in the unit block of East McMurtire Street standing over his motorcycle and was taken into custody.

Hanging on the handlebars of the motorcycle was a black satchel containing a red tube with a green fuse, believed to be an explosive device referred to as “half-stick,” court papers said.

Summit Hill Police Chief Todd Woodward said that suspected homemade explosive was secured by the Allentown Fire Department’s Bomb Squad and tested.

The device tested positive as an explosive, and the Philadelphia Office of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will be conducting further tests on the material in the device, Woodward said.
