SS. Peter and Paul school to hold reunion
SS. Peter & Paul Parish in Lehighton will hold its first-ever school reunion on Saturday.
Education in Lehighton began back around 1885 when the pastor at the time, the Rev. Hubert Hammeke, brought in the Sisters of Charity from Jim Thorpe to begin educating the youth of the parish. The first school was built soon after, with 60 students to start.
In 2014, after 128 years, the Diocese of Allentown closed the school due to low enrollment and rising costs.
John Meier, a lifelong member of SS. Peter & Paul, decided to hold the class reunion after talking with people about it.
“When I went around telling people of the reunion everyone loved the idea,” Meier said. “Even people who could not attend due to distance or previous engagements loved that we were doing it. I have a guy coming in from Los Angeles, believe it or not. He was going to come earlier in the summer but when he heard about this he adjusted his plans.”
The reunion is open to anyone who had a connection with SS. Peter & Paul School; whether as a student, a teacher, a volunteer or a member of the staff.
The program will be on Saturday, starting with the 4 p.m. Mass in the church. The SS. Peter & Paul Chorale Group will provide music.
The Rev. Thomas Kuller, who graduated from SS. Peter & Paul and entered the priesthood, will celebrate the Mass. The party will continue in the parish hall after Mass with a buffet dinner beginning at 6 p.m. and trivia contest, photo memories presentation and special guests at 7 p.m.
This is a casual event, and there is no charge to attend.
“I think the reunion will be fun,” Meier added. “Seeing old friends and laughing together. Seeing old pictures and school memorabilia, and sharing the memories we had together.”
Registration is not required; however, Meier is asking for RSVPs via email at SSPPreunion@gmail.com.
