Lehighton council adopts rules for alcohol in parks

Lehighton hopes it has shored up the issue of alcohol in borough parks.

Borough council on a 6-0 vote Monday adopted an ordinance amending code inconsistencies concerning alcohol in borough parks.

In July, council on a 5-1 measure agreed to advertise an ordinance addressing code inconsistencies regarding alcohol in parks.

Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky, who routinely votes against events that seek alcohol in the borough’s parks, was opposed to the measure.

Borough Manager Dane DeWire said at that time that the borough ordinances currently have two separate sections that deal with the topic.

DeWire said one section of the ordinance deals with parks and specifically provides that alcohol is prohibited.

However, he noted that another section prohibits alcohol in all public spaces, but is subject to exceptions.

Also on Monday, council on a 5-1 vote, accepted the application for use of property on May 2, 2026, for Wine on the River at Baer Memorial Park.

Abelovsky voted against the measure.
