Marian dominates Sch. Haven
This ship never left port.
To put it bluntly, Schuylkill Haven’s volleyball team is still in dry dock.
Facing a fired-up Marian squad, the Hurricanes were overpowered early and often, falling 25-8, 25-7, 25-8, and left without even a dinghy to weather the storm.
It took just 58 minutes for the Fillies to improve to 4-2 overall and 4-1 in Division 2 of the Schuylkill League, staying on the heels of unbeaten Tri-Valley. Marian will see the Lady Bulldogs again on the road next week.
There was simply too much balance in the Fillies’ attack. If dynamic duo Kali Grochowski and Alena Lombardo weren’t enough, Schuylkill Haven also had to contend with middle hitter Addy Marek — not to mention the serving pair of Isabella Horvat and Maddy Davis.
The “killing machine” of Grochowski (seven kills) and Lombardo (six) or the “acers” Horvat (nine) and Davis (six) carried the storyline all evening.
“We have amazing hitters, and our setters have been working with them,” Marian coach Maria Currie said. “Grochowski and Lombardo will wobble anyone’s knees with their power hitting.
“(We’re) finding what works best, and having that perfect pass enables them to get that kill.”
Currie said she was looking for overall team play as the season approaches the halfway mark.
“We talked about precision and perfection. We wanted to make sure every pass gave us multiple options,” she said.
Marian was never really threatened. It rolled to a 10-5 lead in the first set behind Grochowski, Caydense Smith, Eris Hayes and Horvat in serve. Three service aces and a monster kill by Grochowski set the tone as Marian zoomed to a 17-6 advantage. By set’s end, the Fillies closed with seven straight points.
“In a game like this, we want to keep doing the little things correctly,” Currie said.
Set two hardly challenged the Fillies, who jumped out to a 9-3 lead and raced ahead 19-4. Lara Cancio added two kills, and Marian closed with back-to-back aces.
Perhaps the best the out-manned Hurricanes could muster came in the third set, when they briefly rallied. Haven tied it at 1 and 4, trailed just 7-6, and seemed to play with a bit of confidence.
But Marian quickly turned up the heat, going on an uncanny roll to score 18 of the next 20 points and sink the Hurricanes’ ship.
“We get to play a bigger school Monday, then we get to see Tri-Valley Thursday,” Currie said. “Two games where we’ll find out how good we can be.”
DEFENSE … Marian’s defense was superb, taking away nearly every offensive threat Schuylkill Haven tried to generate.
IN SYNC … The Fillies communicated well and consistently turned passes into assists.
TOUGH GO … Schuylkill Haven didn’t record a kill until midway through the third set.
BY THE NUMBERS … Marian had just six errors in the first set, three in the second and five in the third. Haven committed 13, eight and 10 errors across the three sets.
REVVING IT UP … The Fillies visit Hazleton Area before making the trip to Tri-Valley (6-0, 5-0) next Thursday. Marian lost 3-1 at home to the Bulldogs to open the season.
