Mural artist decorates Lake Harmony trash bins
If you’ve noticed some of the bear boxes around Lake Harmony looking brighter and more whimsical lately, you can thank “Mural Mama.”
Mural Mama is Taylor Fitzpatrick of Albrightsville, who has been painting since childhood. She began creating murals while pregnant with her first son, starting with a forest-themed nursery. “I wanted funky accent walls and a bohemian bathroom,” she said, adding that her husband gives her full artistic freedom at home.
Animals, characters, and dinosaurs are among her favorite subjects. Working in acrylics, Fitzpatrick paints freehand after consulting with clients about their ideas. She is then given the freedom to shape the final design. Each bear box can take anywhere from a few days to a week, depending on its detail.
Before turning her focus to murals, Fitzpatrick spent a decade working as a licensed hemodialysis technician. Now, with two young children — a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old — she has shifted her energy fully to painting.
Her work caught the attention of Greg Petrillo, owner of Pocono Mountain Rentals, who is spearheading “Project Bear Box.” The effort transforms ordinary trash bins into works of art.
“You take trash bins that look blighted and make them more attractive with character and uniqueness,” Petrillo said. He hopes to continue expanding the project with more boxes throughout the community.
Fitzpatrick’s goal is to bring more color and joy to public spaces. She also has upcoming meetings with local businesses to discuss new mural projects.
