Weatherly Fall Sports Previews
Weatherly teams are preparing for the fall season in a number of sports.
BOYS SOCCER
Head coach: Kevin Kennedy (9th year)
Assistant coach: Jeff Donadi
League: Schuylkill Division 2
Key losses: Trent Higgins, John Puzzetti, Vincent Paisley, Alex Rosenlund, Michael Davies
Key returnees: Corbin Wagner (Sr., Second Team Schuylkill League forward), Jeremiah Donadi (Jr.)
Top newcomers: Joshua Almanzar (So.)
Season outlook: The Wreckers graduated five seniors, and will look to Wagner to step into the leadership role. Numbers will be the main concern, with the team struggling to field 11 players for each match. Many of the returnees have improved, and Weatherly could continue to mature as the season progresses.
Quotable: “Despite a healthy youth system, strong alumni participation, and increasing travel play, our recruiting at the high school level is a primary hurdle.” – Weatherly head coach Kevin Kennedy
GIRLS SOCCER
Head coach: Paul Eckert
Assistant coach: Devin Berger
Key losses: McKenzie McGill, Molly Kislan, Kiley Holman, Eva Eroh
Key returnees: Laurel Kennedy (Sr.)
Players to watch: Kellyanne Kennedy (Fr.), Maci Kane (Fr.)
Season outlook: Eckert believes his team understands what it takes to compete in the league. With the ability to field a full team, he likes the potential of his underclassmen, especially a promising freshman class.
Quotable: “I feel as though many teams will be surprised in our improvement in one year. We look to add some wins early to start the season. I personally think this team can be very special when all its cylinders click.” – Weatherly head coach Paul Eckert
VOLLEYBALL
Head coach: Erica Kane-Poweski
Assistant coach: Steph Kurtz
League: Schuylkill
Key losses: Rachael Rosenlund (setter), Kaiya Kunkle (hitter), Abby Teodorescu (defensive specialist)
Key returnees: Kelly Reiner (Sr.), Abby Weston (Sr.), Abby Binder (Sr.)
Season outlook: With more newcomers than returnees, it will be interesting to see how the Wreckers mesh with players at different skill levels. Due to low numbers, they will once again field only a varsity squad. Kane-Poweski will rely on her veterans to guide and develop the younger players.
Quotable: “This season may be more of a challenge going in with just a varsity team with more beginner players than veterans. I just want the girls to give it their all, and feel they accomplished what we’ve been practicing. As long as they are having fun and working together as a team, that’s all I’m asking for this season. Getting a few wins wouldn’t hurt either.” – Weatherly head coach Erica Kane-Poweski
CROSS COUNTRY
Head coach: Ryan Kately
Key returnees: Raymond Montz (Sr.), Isaiah Williams (Sr.) Alex Best (So.)
Top newcomers: Rex Bellizia (Fr.) Alexia Kehler (Fr.)
Season outlook: Raymond Montz and Isiah Williams will both look to lead the younger runners, as they have experience having been with the program four years. Alex Best was a few spots away from states last year, so he’ll be in the mix to get to Hershey. Alexia Kehler is a first-year runner, but has burst on the scene and has been a great addition.
Quotable: “This season is all about improving each meet, and building toward the future. Our middle school numbers are big, and numbers should be up the next couple of years. This year, there are a couple runners on the cusp of breaking out. Raymond Montz, Alex Best, and Isiah Williams have the experience ... and Rex Bellizia has been on the 5K circuit all summer. Alexia Kehler will be a name to keep an eye on this season. She has ... been a great leader for our middle school girls who look to continue the success they had last year.” – Weatherly head coach Ryan Kately
