Walnutport discusses police station move

Walnutport may look to relocate its police station to its current recreation building.

Borough council on Thursday discussed moving its headquarters from its current site at 417 S. Lincoln Ave. to 215 S. Lincoln Ave.

The structure at 215 S. Lincoln Ave. currently houses the Walnutport Playground Association building.

Council President Mike Gaston said the borough is thinking about moving the police station from its current headquarters at 417 Lincoln Ave. back to 215 Lincoln Ave.

“The station at 417 Lincoln needs a lot of improvements,” Gaston said.

A feasibility study will be done on both buildings.

After the meeting, borough police Chief Jason Nothstein explained why the move is under consideration.

“The council president approached me about the possibility of moving up to the other building (because), it might be bigger and more roomier for the growth of the police department,” Nothstein said. “They want to do a feasibility study to see if it’s better to move the police department up there, or rehabilitate the current building (which) needs an overhaul.”

Nothstein said the police department has been at its current location for about the last 30 years and described some of the benefits that could come with a potential move.

“We would have more room for growth,” he said. “There are certain aspects I would like to add.”
