Palmerton National Night Out features 45 stands
Community interaction and neighborhood spirit was alive and well as the Palmerton Borough Police Department hosted its National Night Out on Tuesday in the borough park.
Sponsored by Blue Ridge Communications, the event featured 45 community service agencies that ranged from law enforcement to fire departments to first responders and more.
Guests were also treated to a MedEvac helicopter, as well as LifeFlight. A dunk tank allowed community members to take aim at Mayor Don Herrmann.
The Palmerton Christian Action Council of Palmerton Area Churches had a stand and asked that families attending bring food donations for the pantry such as soup, canned vegetables, rice and pasta sides, and pork and beans.
Those in attendance were also able to get information about eligibility.
Diana Mattingly of Palmerton said she was glad she brought her children, Orion, 6, and Lyra, 4, to the event.
“It’s awesome, community-based,” Mattingly said. “It gives them a sense of security knowing that they’re active in the community.”
Tara Frye of Palmerton watched on as her daughter, Ericka Frye, 7, joined other youths in making bracelets at the Palmerton Girl Scout Service Unit table.
“I hope they have an impact on her future,” Frye said. “They look up to volunteer firefighters, cops, sheriffs, and they even have outfits to go with it.”
Patti Green, service unit manager, Palmerton Girl Scout Service Unit, said, “It’s a great event. The girls come together, and they can make bracelets.”
Green encouraged girls to sign up at www.gsep.org.
Borough police Chief Tim Kromer said this year’s event was all he could have asked for and then some.
“Great turnout, great weather,” Kromer said. “It’s exceeded my expectations, just the number of organizations that reached out wanting to be a part of it.”
Kromer added it was great that law enforcement officers can interact with in a positive manner with the children and the rest of the community.
The event concluded with the Concourse Club of Palmerton’s Movie in the Park, “Inside Out 2,”.
