CCTI stairs will be ready for school start
The status of maintenance projects at the Carbon Career & Technical Institute campus in Jim Thorpe was provided to the joint operating committee during its recent meeting.
Ken Walters, supervisor of the building and grounds, addressed the board on several matters.
He said a project to replace the exterior concrete stairway near the entrance of the school hit a snag when crews began demolition.
“The assumption was that the steps were between 12 and 18 inches in depth,” Walters said. “However, demolition revealed the original 1966 steps and foundation beneath the pour-over steps, resulting in a depth of nearly 4 feet.”
Despite the situation, the project remains on track for completion before the students’ return for the new school year, he said.
Walters said weather delays have significantly affected the schedule for the parking lot maintenance; however, he said crack filling, driveway sealcoating and parking lot sealcoating are still expected on schedule, as is the line striping.
Walters said four 4-foot by 4-foot concrete pads were excavated and poured for the new auto lifts for the automotive department.
The concrete is currently curing, and the lifts are scheduled to be installed in the upcoming weeks.
He also told the board the Jim Thorpe Borough drainage project near the entrance of the school’s driveway on 13th Street is on hold, pending its solicitor’s review of one agreement with the executor’s lawyer.
The borough has been advised if the project cannot begin before the first day of school, it will need to be postponed until next summer, Walters said.
