Palmerton Borough mayor withdrawing from ballot

Palmerton Borough Mayor Don Herrmann said he is finished when his term ends Dec. 31.

Herrmann was on the primary ballot for reelection in spring, but told council on Thursday that he is withdrawing his name.

He cited additional responsibilities at his full-time job as the impetus for his decision.

“My workload has increased dramatically,” Herrmann said. “I will withdraw from the election.”

Herrmann was set to run unopposed in the general election in November.

He was originally sworn in to a four-year term as mayor at borough council’s January 2022 reorganization meeting.

Active in the community, Herrmann took over for former mayor and current borough Councilman William Gallagher.

After the meeting, Herrmann reiterated his decision was solely based on his increased workload at his full-time job.

“I really enjoyed it,” he said of his time as mayor of the borough.

Herrmann added he’s hopeful people step up in running for the mayoral position in the upcoming election.

Contacted Friday, Jen Ketchledge, director of elections, said potential candidates must act soon to be listed on the ballot for November’s general election.

“They would have to do a nomination paper,” said Ketchledge, who said Sept. 15 is the deadline to do so. “Or, they can do a write-in on the ballot.”
