Penn State hosts vineyard program at Galen Glen

Wine industry professionals and others interested in practical approaches to sustainability in vineyard and winery operations can learn about the latest strategies and practices by attending an upcoming Penn State Extension workshop.

“Sustainability and Cabernet Franc Production in the East” will occur from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at Galen Glen Winery, 255 Winter Mountain Drive, Andreas.

This workshop is designed for vineyard owners and managers, winery owners, winemakers, new and veteran industry members, and anyone interested in grape and wine production.

Participants will engage in discussion during which industry leaders and academic experts will explore practical approaches to sustainability in vineyard and winery operations. They can gain insights from the New York Sustainable Winegrowing program, explore considerations for protecting pollinators, and hear refined strategies for Cabernet Franc production from seasoned growers and winemakers across New York, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Among other topics, participants will learn about:

— Approaches to sustainability in vineyards.

— Wine grape cultivars that reduce fungicide use.

— Field research on disease-tolerant wine grape cultivars.

— Incorporating biofungicides into spray programs.

— Sustainable wine grape production efforts in New York.

— Protecting pollinator insects in vineyard systems.

— Cabernet Franc grape and wine production in the eastern United States.

The workshop carries a registration fee. Organizers noted that space is limited, so preregistration is required by Aug. 15.
