Marine league donates to nonprofits

The Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League Detachment 626 distributed checks/donations to several nonprofit organizations Wednesday morning at the American Legion Post 314 in Lehighton.

Donations were given to Together with Veterans ($3,500) and Valor Clinic Foundation ($1,500).

Cheryl Laub, adjutant/paymaster, Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League, said the donations came from the $5,547 that was raised during the organization’s third annual Golf Tournament held May 10 at Blue Shamrock Golf Course in Palmerton.

“We raise more money every year,” Laub said. “They appreciate what we do for the veterans, and we appreciate the sponsors and golfers.”

Laub added that the group plans to send $500 to Wreaths Across America, designated to the cemetery in Hometown, later this year.

“This is not a fundraiser for our league,” she said. “We do it to help veteran organizations that have actual programs that help our veterans.”

Royce Featherman, vice president of Valor Clinic Foundation, expressed gratitude for the donation.

“This goes a long way in keeping the lights on and food for the veterans,” Featherman said. “It’s very generous.”

Featherman added they are always looking for volunteers, and noted they meet at 6:30 p.m. the first Monday of each month at Paul’s House in Brodheadsville.

Christine LeClair, director of Veterans Affairs for Carbon County, said they are heavily dependent on donations.

“It’s the continued support like this that helps us implement lifesaving programs in our community,” LeClair said. “We host monthly coffee clubs, peer-to-peer support groups and larger events like our Veterans Day Dinner at Penn’s Peak.”

The Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League is a veterans organization founded to continue the traditions and spirit of all Marines who proudly wear, or have worn, the eagle, globe and anchor of the Marine Corps.

The Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League held its third annual Golf Tournament on May 10 at Blue Shamrock Golf Course in Palmerton. The group presented some of the proceeds from that event on Wednesday to Together with Veterans and Valor Clinic Foundation.
