Tamaqua doesn’t expect changes from trash hauler sale

Tamaqua residents shouldn’t see any changes in trash collection after their current hauler, Tamaqua Transfer & Recycling Inc., is sold.

“I’m sure everyone is aware that Tamaqua Transfer & Recycling is being sold to Cassella Waste Systems,” borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt told borough council on Tuesday.

He noted that he was recently in contact with Larry Wittig, president of Tamaqua Transfer.

“He assures us that nothing should change as far as the amount that they collect, the collection dates, the times, etc.,” Steigerwalt said.

He added that Cassella is “purchasing everything” from Tamaqua Transfer. The company plans to keep all employees on board.

“Eventually we might see a change — they might buy some new trucks and put their name on it, or something to that effect,” Steigerwalt said. “But for the time being, we shouldn’t notice any changes in our garbage and recycling collection.”

Settlement is expected Aug. 1.

Steigerwalt said that the borough’s current contract with Tamaqua Transfer expires in June 2027.

Council authorized authorize Steigerwalt to sign a contract that transfers services to Cassella, which is based in Rutland, Vermont.

According to Cassella’s website, the company has about 1 million residential, commercial, municipal, institutional and industrial customers in 10 states.

CDBG funds

In an unrelated matter, Steigerwalt noted the borough received permission to put leftover Community Development Block Grant funds toward another project. When work to replace fences at the North and Middle Ward and the South Ward playgrounds, approximately $2,500 remained.

The funds will be used toward the demolition of 401 Willing St.
