Tamaqua drops Section 6 10-11 opener

District 18 champs fall in their Section 6 10-11 contest to CR-Newtown

NORTH BETHLEHEM – An old nemesis came back to haunt Tamaqua in Tuesday’s Section 6 Little League 10-11 baseball tournament game.

Council Rock-Newtown, a perennial power from suburban Philadelphia, showed off its firepower early and often, erupting for 11 runs in the first two innings on its way to a 20-3, four-inning win over Tamaqua.

The key to Newtown’s offensive explosion? Patience.

The District 30 champions took advantage of control issues on the mound, scoring three runs in the first inning behind a two-run double from TJ Wengert and an RBI single from Gavin Zorich.

Newtown blew the game open with an eight-run second inning, sending 12 batters to the plate.

Owen Burger, Graeme Becker, Arin Shah, Wengert and Luke Bovell each singled in the frame, which included five hits and three walks.

After a two-hour rain delay, Newtown was determined to end things early — and it did.

Despite the deficit, Tamaqua refused to go quietly.

The District 18 champions scored all three of their runs in the third inning.

Bryce Tuckett, Mason Murphy, Ellison Sommers and Layton Laybourn all reached on walks. Abram Graver drove in a run with a fielder’s choice, Grayson Smith added an RBI single, and Aidan Sabol knocked in another with a base hit.

But Newtown responded with a nine-run fourth inning to put the game away.

Shah and James Esposito each delivered three-run triples during the rally to seal the win.

Tamaqua will look to stay alive when it meets host North Bethlehem — which lost to Newtown 10-3 on Monday — tonight at 6 p.m. in an elimination game.

The winner will face Newtown again on Thursday.
