A project to build over 3 million square feet of buildings off Interstate 81 in McAdoo first proposed four years ago is being revived by another developer.
According to property deeds filed in Schuylkill County, a firm listed as Amazon Data Services, Seattle, Wash., has purchased a 350-acre parcel of land in Kline Township for $178,627,720.
The area known as “Devil’s Mountain” is bounded by Route 309, the village of Lofty, and the on/off-bound ramps of Interstate 81 and the village of Haddock.
The original proposal by the Brewster Land Co. of Massachusetts was to build 3.75 million square feet of warehousing space on the mountain, which is popular for hunting.
Kline Township Supervisor Gary Perna confirmed the Devil’s Mountain site is the place where the new developer acquired the acreage, but declined to identify the new developer.
Another part of the original proposal being revived is moving the intersection of Route 309 and the Lofty Road north about 500 feet to avoid having traffic – particularly large trucks – stopping on a hill, especially in winter driving.
A number of large data centers — places where information can be stored — have been proposed in the area. None of those proposals have come to fruition to date.
