Jim Thorpe High School getting new gym floor

Jim Thorpe Area High School will be getting a new gym floor after the district’s board of directors approved a complete resurfacing project Wednesday at a cost of $52,500. The project, which will be completed by Miller Sports Construction, is scheduled to be carried out in July.

“The floor has not been done in many years,” Superintendent Robert Presley said. “It is time that it has to be stripped down.”

The approved scope of work involves sanding the existing gym surface, which covers approximately 12,959 square feet. According to the proposal submitted by Miller Sports Construction, the company will use three grades of sandpaper to remove all finish and paint from the floor. The sanding will be performed up to, but not under, the bleachers.

After sanding, the company will vacuum and tack the surface to remove dust before applying new paint lines and graphics. The finished gym floor will feature a new design element.

“The one adjustment to the gym floor that the board approved was to take the torch off the floor and make it a JT like our football field,” Presley said. “Since the gym has a bunch of the torches on the walls and in other areas ... it won’t (remove) the torch from the room, but we’ll have the JT like our stadium field does.”

A Bona Super Sport MVP five-coat finish system, which includes both seal and finishing coats, will be applied to the gym floor as part of the process, per the agreement.

The board confirmed the project will be completed through the Pennsylvania COSTARS Cooperative Purchasing Program.

“That gives you the best pricing in the state, so you don’t go for a bid for it,” Presley said.

The work, per the proposal, is expected to take approximately three weeks.
