Two people were taken into custody on Wednesday following a chase on Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County involving a stolen vehicle.

State police at the Hazleton barracks said the vehicle was reported stolen to them on Tuesday, and was identified by Mahanoy City police yesterday at about 3:55 a.m. within their jurisdiction.

State police said borough police attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, initiating a pursuit that traveled into Luzerne County. They said the driver of the vehicle attempted to negotiate a curve getting onto Interstate 80 eastbound from Interstate 81 northbound, but lost control of it and it crashed, then the four suspects within the vehicle fled on foot.

Police said a man was taken into custody without incident shortly after in a wooded area while a second occupant, a juvenile male, was taken into custody without incident in a heavily wooded area between the Interstate 80 east and westbound lanes.

Police said additional suspects are still being sought as the investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by the Troop N Criminal Investigation Unit. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact police at 570- 459-3890.
