The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office is looking for the Hazleton man accused of stealing two historic bells from the Nesquehoning Historical Society.
A bench warrant was issued for 36-year-old Luis Ocasio, who was charged with multiple counts of theft, receiving stolen property, theft of metal and institutional vandalism.
The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Warrant Division on Wednesday posted on social media seeking information on his whereabouts.
Authorities believe he has ties to the West Hazleton area, and court documents also list a West Hazleton address related to the posting of his unsecured $250,000 bail, which has now been revoked and forfeited.
The bench warrant was issued May 27, five days after Ocasio was scheduled to appear for a pretrial conference in the Carbon County District Attorney’s Office.
Ocasio was charged in April 2024 with the theft of the historic bells — one of which was over 200 years old and weighed about 1,400 pounds. The other bell was over 100 years old and weighed about 200 pounds.
Ocasio took the bells from outside of the historical society on West Railroad Street on April 2 and sold them to a metal recycling center in Hazleton for $5,573.33.
The bells were not recovered, as they were broken down and shipped out with other metal before the recycling center knew they were stolen. The owner of the center provided the police with information on the seller.
