NW grads ‘close this chapter and begin a new one’

After a two-day weather delay, 165 seniors from the Class of 2025 received diplomas at Northwestern Lehigh High School’s 68th annual commencement on Sunday at Tiger Stadium.

Principal Aileen Yadush opened the ceremony, praising students’ perseverance and growth.

“Seniors, as we reflect on your journey … take pride in every challenge you faced and every milestone you’ve reached,” she said. “Today marks the start of a new chapter … carry the memories you’ve made and share what you’ve learned with those who walk behind you.”

Class President Rylee Grace McGinley thanked her parents and teachers, acknowledging the lasting influence of educators.

“Although we didn’t always fully appreciate you on test days … we realize how fortunate we are to have had you,” she said. “Getting to know all of you has been a great blessing.”

Reflecting on their time at Northwestern, she said, “It seems like just yesterday we were scared freshmen. … Now we’re ready to close this chapter and begin a new one.”

McGinley encouraged her peers to live in the moment.

“ ‘Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift,’ ” she said, quoting Kung Fu Panda. “The present truly is a gift. … You can choose to slow down and appreciate what’s in front of you.”

She closed with a message of encouragement: “No matter where life takes you … remember that you have a purpose and there is a plan for you.”

Arianna Fratrik gave the second student address.

“Every year we honor excellence … but struggles have also shaped us,” she said. “Your struggles make you a better person.”

Fratrik called on classmates to lead with inclusion and empathy.

“Every voice matters … let’s create spaces where everyone feels valued and seen,” she said.

Cara Marie Thomas’s speech, “What We Leave Behind,” highlighted legacy.

“This concept wasn’t in our textbooks,” she said. “Unknowingly, we built something not easily erased — we built a legacy.”

She reminded classmates that their impact wasn’t in grades or awards, but in unseen moments of kindness.

“We helped each other up … made one another smile,” she said. “While our individual legacies might not be large, each of you made a difference.”

Thomas encouraged students to think about the mark they want to leave: “Be proud of yourself. Be proud of the new legacy you make.”

Student honors followed, with recognition for National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society and Science National Honor Society members. Assistant Principal Matthew Givler noted that 60 students received more than $46,000 in awards and scholarships.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who made these awards possible,” he said.

School board President Todd Hernandez thanked families, staff and the Tiger community.

“As you commemorate this day, reflect on your experiences and those who helped you along the way,” he said. “Dream big; stay humble; be kind. Remember the tenets of Tiger Pride.”

Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Holman said commencement is a time to recognize growth and resilience.

“You represent a future of great potential … whether your next step is higher education, work or military service,” she said. “Take pride in your accomplishments, and in those who helped you get here.”

She added, “Success won’t be measured by titles, but by the difference you make. Live with purpose and lead with integrity.”

Yadush closed the ceremony with a nod to Amazon’s slogan: “Work hard. Have fun. Make history.”

“This year, you worked hard, had fun — maybe a little too much — and made history,” she said. “You have left a mark that can’t be returned or exchanged. You will be missed.”
