Voter turnout light Tuesday

Moderate voter turnout could be seen at several election sites throughout the region as voters hit the polls to have their voices heard in Tuesday’s Primary Election.

Much as she has done for over the past half-century, Marlene Greenwood of Palmerton came out to the Palmerton Community Ambulance building to do her civic duty and cast her votes.

“It’s my constitutional right,” Greenwood said. “I need to do this and set examples.”

For Greenwood, who has voted for over 50 years, Tuesday’s experience was not unlike anything else she’s ever encountered.

“This is the Primary,” she said. “It’s kind of cut and dry.”

A little over a dozen miles away at the Mahoning Valley Fire Company, voter turnout appeared to be gaining steam later Tuesday morning.

Casting their ballots is a tradition Bill and Peggy Murray of the Mahoning Valley have partaken in for many years.

“We vote in all these elections,” Bill Murray said. “We’re both retired, and it’s a nice day.”

Bill surmised that sometimes change be a good thing.

“We make it a point to come out every election,” he said. “We need some fresh blood.”

Voter turnout was light in northern Carbon County.

Poll workers sat alone waiting for voters as the afternoon waned. They had only seen 127 voters at Eurana Park, while less than 90 showed up at the polling place at the American Legion with less than three hours left in the day for people to cast votes.

Schuylkill County

Polls were rather sleepy in some parts of Schuylkill County.

During the lunchtime hour, there was no line for either of two Rush Township voting districts housed at the Hometown Fire Company.

At 12:15 p.m., the poll for the township’s Elixir district had counted just 25 voters.

A poll at the Tamaqua Municipal Building was slow but steady, poll workers said. Just before 1 p.m., the poll counted 84 voters.

Outside the building, supporters of Jael Houser — a candidate for mayor — passed out coffee, snacks and bottled water.

And in Coaldale, poll workers at Coaldale Borough Hall outnumbered voters around 1:30 p.m.

Despite light turnout, many gathered outside individual polls to hand out candidates’ information.
