Supper tonight

Zion United Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville will be providing a free community dinner of chicken and rice with a vegetable and dessert tonight.

Drive-thru to pick up your meal between 5-6 p.m. All are welcome.

Pocono Women

The Pocono Women’s Group will meet at 7 p.m. tonight in Effort UMC’s Wesley Hall.

Celebrating seniors

The youth group at Our Lady Queen of Peace, Brodheadsville, will celebrate its high school seniors with a barbecue at the church pavilion from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Participants are reminded to bring a side dish to share.

Also, the graduates and their families are invited to a celebration of your achievement and receive a blessing on June 1 during the 11 a.m. Mass.

All who RSVP are asked to reply to Carbone@qopchurch.org by May 26. Graduates are asked to answer questions about their education, activities and future plans.

Remembrance event

American Legion Honor Guard from Post 927 will be special guests at the Memorial Day flag retirement ceremony and remembrance event at 10 a.m. Thursday at the main entrance of Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono by the flagpole at 206 E. Brown St.

The West End Missions dinner at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is offered at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Polk Parks & Rec

The Polk Township Parks & Recreation Commission meets at 6 p.m. Thursday.

SFRC pantry open

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday.

Animal Frolic

Quiet Valley is hosting a Farm Animal Frolic from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. It is a time “to meet and greet” the farm’s spring babies.

In addition, there will be special demonstrations, traditional sheep shearing, spring starter plants and a Civil War encampment.

There is a charge, but children under 3 are free.

QV is seeking items for its Timeless Treasures sale. Among the suggestions: kitchenware, tools, linens, wall art, jewelry, small accent pieces; please, no books, shoes, kids toys, stuffed animals or nonworking electrical items.

Sunday School

The end of Sunday School at Effort UMC will be at the 11 a.m. service Sunday.

New information regarding Sunday School for the summer, as well as Fun Days and Vacation Bible School will be announced.

Memorial Day event

Polk Township will hold its memorial event Sunday at the Polk Veterans’ Memorial and Adam’s Faith Garden on Trach Road in Kresgeville.

It celebrates the 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War and the birth of the U.S. Army, after the 1775 Second Continental Congress.

It is also the 250th anniversary of the Navy and Marine Corps, both founded in Philadelphia. Both launched their fight for American Independence from the Delaware River.

A Branch of Service Roll Call will be done during the event. Veterans and active military are asked to wear their uniform or other insignia representing their branch of service.

Attendees are asked to participate in Operation Paperback, an organization that sends books to veterans and active military personnel, by bringing books — no romance novels — or monetary donations to the event. The cost to ship 20 books is $7.

Parking is available at Salem-St. Paul Church.

Attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair. In the event of rain, the observance will be held in the church. This is a solemn event that will start promptly at 2 p.m.

Ceremony in Gilbert

American Legion Post 927 on Route 209 in Gilbert is holding its Memorial Day remembrance event beginning at 11 a.m. Monday inside.

Special guests will include Chris Bryner, a bagpiper, and Don Wild Eagle. The observance will move outside for the flag ceremony.

UMC Seekers

The last day of the Seekers meeting at Effort UMC is Monday. The group will begin again in September.

Pizza sale set

St. John’s Lutheran Church, 164 Merwinsburg Road, Effort, is holding a ready to bake pizza sale through June 13. Orders must be called in no later than June 1. The pizzas will be ready to take home and bake, or they can be frozen.

The pies are 12 inches and can be ordered by calling the church at 570-629-4309 or 570-977-9040.

People should leave a clear message with the number of pies and contact name and phone number. Pickup and pay — cash only — will be 4-5 p.m. June 13.

Confirmation

Effort UMC will celebrate the Confirmation of five young people at the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday, June 1.

Grads to be honored

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church will honor graduates on June 1. The church administration is asking that if church families have a graduating student, please let the church know their name and the school or college from which the student is graduating. Families can reply to olga@pvag.net. Also, please let the church know which service the graduate will be attending.

Habitat anniversary

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is celebrating its 35th anniversary at the Blueprints & Breakfast: Creating Homes for a Better Future breakfast from 8-9 a.m. June 11 at Camelback Resort in Tannersville.

The event will be dedicated to Weiler Abrasives for their long-term support of Habitat for Humanity, and their help in reaching the 35-year milestone. Breakfast is sponsored by Camelback.

Tickets, which include a buffet breakfast, can be purchased by May 30 online at https://habitatmc.com/.

Trexler trip

A family-friendly day trip to the Trexler Nature Preserve in Schnecksville on June 11 is being offered by Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center.

The Kettle Creek bus will depart at 9 a.m. and return at 3 p.m.

Trexler, a 1,495-acre natural preserve, is the largest park in Lehigh County and a diverse natural gem with over 18 miles of trails. Participants will ride through the game preserve to view herds of bison and spend time snorkeling in the Jordan Creek.
