Weissport back to full strength

The Weissport Borough Council held a reorganizational meeting Monday evening and is now able to conduct business again.

Following a petition made to the courts, Weissport Solicitor Gregory Mousseau was able to issue the oath of office for one new council member, Shelley Fisher, who then took her place on the council.

Fisher, in addition to existing council members Arland Moyer Sr. and Bill Hartzell, then had the quorum of three members needed to conduct business for the borough.

Council then reorganized, with Arland Moyer, Sr. being nominated and voted in as the Borough Council president. Bill Hartzell was nominated and voted in as vice president.

Moyer asked if anyone else present would be interested in serving on the borough council, as they needed to fill the remaining two seats. Andrew Hottenstein and Colton Breiner expressed interest and after some questions, were voted into office. Mousseau issued the oath of office for them.

A motion was passed naming Moyer, Hartzell, and Fisher as being able to sign checks for the borough.

Council then passed a motion to name Arland Moyer Jr. to the municipal authority board, the board that runs the sewer system for the borough. That board was also down to two members, did not have a quorum and could not conduct business.

Arland Moyer Sr. abstained from voting, as Moyer Jr. is his son. In addition, new Borough Council members Andrew Hottenstein and Colton Breiner also agreed to serve on the Municipal Authority Board, bringing the board back up to five members.

Borough Police Chief Matthew Williams submitted a report for March and April 2025. During that period, he had 30 calls for service, which included 12 quality of life calls, 3 theft calls, 4 junk vehicles and 2 junk on property calls, and 5 non-traffic citations.

A motion passed to hire Cheryl Miller as the borough secretary/treasurer at a rate of $15 per hour for approximately 15 hours per week, although it could be more hours until she is trained. The motion directs Miller to solicit a cost of her bond to be presented to Council for payment. Council member Andrew Hottenstein abstained from voting, as Miller is his daughter.

A motion was passed to hire Arland Moyer Jr. to the Public Works Department at a rate of $12 per hour for 20 hours per week. Moyer Sr. abstained from that vote.

A motion was passed to have Borough Council meet twice per month; on the first and third Monday of each month, to begin June 2 at 7 p.m. at the borough office.

Council President Arland Moyer Sr. then thanked everyone.

“I would like to thank everybody for coming on the board, to help this town out. We really appreciate it.”
