Summit Hill council honors student athlete
Summit Hill Borough Council on Tuesday honored Brenda Banks, who is virtually unstoppable as a female wrestler and holds a Panther Valley High School track and field record.
Mayor Jeffrey Szczecina presented a silver necklace to Banks. The inscription was a quote from Muhammad Ali: “Champions aren’t made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them — a desire, a dream, a vision.”
The mayor told Banks, “Congratulations on your amazing accomplishments and on becoming a role model for so many in the Panther Valley community.”
Banks, 17, began her wrestling career in ninth grade. In her freshman year, she was a District 11 champion and a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state champion.
She repeated those accomplishments in her sophomore year and also won the PIAA regional championship, which was held for the first time for female wrestlers.
Banks won the three titles again this year as a junior.
Szczecina said following the 2023-24 season that Banks competed in and won the 16U national championship tournament.
The upcoming national championship is in North Dakota and Banks will again be competing.
The mayor said Banks also holds the Panther Valley High School girls’ shot put record with a throw of 36 feet, 6 inches.
Following graduation, Banks plans to study political science and criminal justice and pursue a career in the field of law.
She is a daughter of Glynnis Banks.
Accompanying her to the meeting were her older sister, Tyanna; a younger sister, Scarla; and a stepsister, Navi.
