Scholar-athlete banquet on Sunday

The Schuylkill Chapter No. 25 of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame will holds its 53rd annual banquet on Sunday, April 7, at 5 p.m. at Hillcrest Catering Hall in Minersville. Fourteen seniors from Schuylkill County-area high schools will be honored for their football and academic excellence.

Following are the area players who will be honored along with their accomplishments both on and off the field.MARIAN - Lukas Damian, a 6-foot, 220-pound senior, Damian was a three-year starter for the Colts and played tight end, quarterback, wide receiver and linebacker. In 2013, Damian was selected to the Associated Press Class A first team at linebacker, was the Republican & Herald, Lehighton Times News, Anthracite Football League and Schuylkill County Football Coaches Association defensive player of the year. He was a Hazleton Standard-Speaker first-team selection and Times News first-team selection at linebacker. Damian led the Marian defense with 163 tackles during his senior season. He was also a two-year member of the basketball and track and field teams, and ranked in the top 20 percent of his 91-senior class. An honor roll member, Damian has completed advanced placement courses in calculus and statistics. He has been a two-year member of the Schuylkill County Drug and Alcohol Advisory Board, and a three-year member of the Middle States Planning Board. He has served as the student council president during his senior year. The son of Frank and Molly Damian, Lukas has been awarded a full athletic scholarship to play football at Duquense University where he plans to major in nursing.PANTHER VALLEY - Kyle Ferryman, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound senior, Ferryman was a four-year starter for the Panthers at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and defensive back. A 1,350-yard rusher for his team in 2013, Ferryman was a first-team selection to the Schuylkill County Football Coaches Association at defensive back and a second-team offensive athlete. He was an Anthracite Football League first-team selection at defensive back and was named a second-team offensive athlete. He was named the Lehighton Times-News player of the week for his performance versus Jim Thorpe. For his leadership, Ferryman was a three-year team captain, finished with 12 interceptions in his career was named Panther Valley's 2013 Most Valuable Player. He was also the Mayor William Whitehead Memorial Award winner. A three-year member of the basketball and baseball teams, Ferryman is ranked 15 in a class of 85 seniors and has completed advanced placement courses in calculus and British Literature. He is a member of the National Honor Society. The son of Kristin Kosalko and Josh Miller, Kyle will attend Morvian College to major in physical therapy.TAMAQUA AREA - Michael Kelly, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound senior, Kelly was a senior starter at defensive back and wide receiver for the Blue Raiders. The team's selection as the defensive back of the year in 2013, Kelly also participated in track and field for three years. He is ranked 17th out of 156 seniors and has been accepted to Penn State-Hazleton. He was also awarded a Commonwealth Campus First-Year Award at Penn State-Hazleton. Kelly is a two-year member of the National Honor Society, a four-year member of the Tamaqua Area ski club, and a two-year member of the physics club and world language club. He has participated in meals on wheels, Willing Park clean up, Tamaqua volunteers and numerous community activities held by the Tamaqua Area School District. The son of Melga and Francis Kelly of Tamaqua, Michael plans to major in engineering at Penn State University.
