Man with machete charged in assault
A Kunkletown man is facing multiple charges after police said he injured his mother with a machete during a domestic dispute.
According to an affidavit from trooper Alexander Rankovich of the Pennsylvania State Police, Lehighton barracks, troopers responded around 6:59 p.m. Sunday to the 100 block of James Lane in Eldred Township for a report of a man holding a knife to a woman’s neck.
When officers arrived, they spoke with both the suspect, 51-year-old Sameer Qureshi, and his mother.
Qureshi told police he had been arguing with his mother when he grabbed a machete and threatened to harm himself on the back deck of the home.
He said his mother tried to take the weapon from him and was cut on the hand in the process.
Troopers detained Qureshi at the scene.
His mother told troopers she noticed Qureshi experiencing what appeared to be a mental health episode and he retrieved a machete from his room, holding it to his neck and threatening to hurt himself.
When she called 911, she said Qureshi pressed the machete to her neck and yelled, “You called the police. You called the police.”
She said she backed away into the house and then returned to the deck, asking Qureshi to put the weapon down.
As she gestured toward the machete, she said Qureshi swung it and struck her right thumb, cutting her and causing bleeding.
West End EMS evaluated her injuries at the scene, but she declined medical treatment.
Qureshi is charged with two counts of simple assault and one count each of aggravated assault and possession of an instrument of crime with intent.
He is being held in Monroe County Prison on $40,000 bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing May 1 before District Judge Colleen Mancuso in Brodheadsville.
