Walker scaling back Wildcat Park project after high bid

Walker Township supervisors discussed scaling down the Wildcat Park renovation project Thursday night.

The original project was estimated to cost $82,671. The sole bidder for the project was Spotts Brothers Inc. from Schuylkill Haven, which bid $106,866.48.

The township did receive a $56,000 grant from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. That would mean the township would have to pay the remaining $50,866.48.

Mike Begis from ARRO Engineering had contacted the DCNR to see if any additional grants would be available; however, he was advised there are not.

The original plan included several pieces of play equipment such as a new swing set and a play structure, plus the installation of an ADA-mandated parking space, and paving a path from that parking space to the pavilion.

The supervisors tabled any further action in order to go through and get specific costs for each item and determine what to cut from the project.

The supervisors also discussed the upcoming 2025 road projects.

The four main areas they were looking at doing tar and chip were parts of Wildcat Road, East Valley Road, Lower Road and Catawissa Road.

The estimated cost would be approximately $195,000 for all four areas with a single layer. Some parts of Lower Road might need a double layer, which would bring the project total to $212,000.

Before putting the project out for bids, the supervisors plan to go out March 28 to inspect the streets in question and decide if all four areas need to be done right away.
