Carbon man charged for fleeing police
An Albrightsville man has been charged with fleeing police.
The defendant was identified as Raymond Groff, 46.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by officer Mason Moran of the Kidder Township Police Department:
Around 12:18 a.m. July 9, Moran was monitoring traffic in the area of Route 903 and the Penn-Kidder Campus.
About four minutes later, a white four-door sedan passed by and a registration check was conducted. The vehicle license came back suspended and expired for insurance cancellation.
Moran pulled out behind the car. Before Moran activated his emergency lights, the car began to accelerate.
The sedan turned left onto Route 534 and continued at a speed that led Moran to believe the car’s driver was attempting to elude him.
Moran activated his emergency lights and siren and continued pursing the car, which traveled eastbound on Route 534 in an unsafe manner, speeding through tight turns and accelerating on straightaways.
The car eventually slowed down near the Indian Mountain Lake Estates and began to travel at a normal speed with its flashers on.
Shortly after Moran advised dispatchers of his location, he saw the car pull into a residence in the 100 block of Tapuco Drive, Penn Forest Township.
Moran ordered the driver, identified as Groff, out of the car.
The suspect, who was placed in hand restraints, said that he had fled because he knew his registration was suspended and he didn’t want the vehicle impounded.
A records check determined that Groff has several unpaid traffic tickets, his driver’s license was suspended, the registration on the vehicle was confirmed to be suspended and not have current insurance.
Groff faces charges of fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving vehicle at safe speed, driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked, duty of driver on approach of emergency vehicle and required financial responsibility.
He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Aug. 21 before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. of Weatherly.
