Lehighton Band to present final summer concert of season
The Lehighton Band will present its third and final summer concert under the stars for the 2024 season.
It will be special a Side-By-Side concert with the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band at 8 p.m. Aug. 15 in the Lehighton Park Amphitheater.
The Lehighton Band has been providing music to our town and beyond since 1864 and the Boys and Girls Band (formerly the Lehighton Boys Band) has been doing the same since 1910. The bands will join forces to make for an enjoyable night of music.
The concert will begin with the Lehighton Band playing Jack Stamp’s arrangement of the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
The band will kick off with the march “Colonel Bogey” by Kenneth J. Alford. It will be followed by a song that isn’t often associated with concert band. Band member Mike Reph has purchased Pachelbel’s “Canon” arranged for concert band by Richard E. Brown.
Other selections for the first part of the concert include “Pop and Rock Legends,” “The Music of the Beatles” arranged by Michael Sweeney which include several audience favorite Beatles songs including “All My Lovin,’” “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Ticket To Ride,” “Yesterday,” “Norwegian Wood,” “Got To Get You Into My Life,” “Here, There and Everywhere,” “The Fool On The Hill,” “Penny Lane,” “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer,” “Lady Madonna,” and “Something.” “They Went Thataway,” arranged by Paul Jennings, is next and includes songs from the prairie and the Old West.
Also included in the first part of the program is Jimmy Buffet — The Hits by Patrick Roszell, which includes “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” “Changes in Latitude,” “Changes in Attitude,” and “Margaritaville.” It was donated to the band by member Linda Merlo.
The Lehighton band will end their solo portion of the program with John Philip Sousa’s “Washington Post March.”
While the Boys and Girls Band makes its way to the stage band members Roxie Person, Trumpet and Brock Heckman, Trombone will be joined by their trio partner Nick Jaeschke, Horn, to present a special arrangement. The trio is known as Lithium Brass and plays throughout the area.
Once the Boys and Girls Band are in their seats the combined band portion of the concert will begin. They will open with a Boys and Girls Band favorite, “Beyond the Wind” by Mark Williams. “Excalibur” by James Swearingen will be next on the program. The songs performed by the combined band were part of the Boys and Girls Band Spring concert which focused on Heroes, adventure and fantasy.
“Let it Go” from the Movie Frozen will be the next song on the program. To wrap up the program, the band will play “Hey Baby” which was made famous in the movie “Dirty Dancing,” and finally the combined band will close the concert with John Williams’ “Star Wars Theme” arranged by Carl Strommen.
The concert is free to the public. A free will offering will be accepted and divided by the bands. Both bands are nonprofit organizations.
The Boys and Girls Band offers VERY reasonable rates on lessons for all band instruments in both private and group settings.
Both the Lehighton Band and the Lehighton Boys and Girls Band are under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley.
