Legion hosts basket social to help with building repairs

The American Legion Post 314 of Lehighton will present its third annual Spring Basket Social from 4-9 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

There are 200 baskets and over 50 gift cards, said Susan Steager, steward.

Steager said this year’s event will feature lots of large items, such as a 55-inch TV, wooden rockers, a pink Cadillac float, and much more.

The drawing will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Steager said that many local businesses have donated prizes. There will be a separate drawing for a patio set.

“I’d like to thank everybody in the community, whether it was large or small, every little bit helps,” Steager said. “I believe the basket social gets bigger and better every year.”

Steager added there will be a bake sale the entire time, and that the kitchen will be open during the basket social.

Large item tickets cost $1 each; $5 a card and 5 cards for $20. Large ticket items are sold separately. The patio set is $3 a ticket, two for $5, or five for $10.

“All our donations go toward our building fund,” she said. “Last year we put a ceiling in, which was very expensive.”

Steager said the donations help out with those types of projects.

“We’d like to do our parking lot within the next year or two,” she said. “That’s one of our goals.”

In October, Carbon County Commissioners adopted a resolution to submit an application to the Commonwealth Financing Authority for a Monroe County Local Share Account grant in the amount of $73,581.

The money, if secured, would be used toward electrical renovations and the parking lot rehabilitation at the legion.

The Lehighton American Legion had several issues over the last few months with its ceiling inside the main hall coming down.

Several people, including businesses and contractors, banded together after the ceiling came down to donate time, talent and money to repair the damage.

The event will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. TERRY AHNER/TIMES NEWS
