Relay for Life of West End set for Friday in PV stadium

Fun, food and games will give area residents the opportunity to raise funds for the American Cancer Society when the Relay for Life of the West End (Monroe County) will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Pleasant Valley High School stadium grounds in Brodheadsville.

Organizers have scheduled numerous events for adults and children alike.

Gates to the stadium will open at 4 p.m., with the opening ceremony planned to kick off the evening at 5 p.m. The Pleasant Valley High School Marching Band will lead the opening ceremony with the flag-raising and National Anthem duties, followed by the introduction of teams and participants, and the Parade of Teams.

The evening offers residents the chance to enjoy dinner amid activities as the concession stand will offer a variety of menu options from 4 to 9 p.m.

Meanwhile, face painting will be an option for children from 5 to 7 p.m.; Survivor Flower Pot plantings will be taken from 4 to 7 p.m.; attendees can vote for the winner of the Team Banner of a car show that will be open from 5 to 9 p.m.; and hobby horse races will begin at 5:45 p.m.

The relay will also feature a basket raffle and 50-50 drawings, a Kiss the Pig collection and ax throwing activities.

Starting at 5:30 p.m., six games of Toy Bingo will be held. All children participating must be accompanied by an adult, who is also welcome to play.

A Cow Chip Bingo also is slated to be held. The cost will be $10 per square with the winner to receive $500. The competition will start at 6 p.m. and will be followed by a Cow Pie Eating competition at 6:15 p.m.

For those who enjoy country line dancing, it will begin at 6:45 p.m.

At 8:30 p.m., the Kiss the Pig event will take place in which each faculty member will have a dedicated piggy bank where visitors can place donations between 4 to 8 p.m. The winner will be revealed at 8:30 p.m., followed by the pig kissing event.

District personnel participating in the Kiss the Pig event include Jeff Lazowski, Jennifer Baker, Mark Kutterolf, Amy Wilusz, Maria Chapman, Loretta Snyder and James Shoopack.

A Survivors’ Reception is scheduled to get underway at 7 p.m., and will include a Mountain Warriors demonstration and a Survivor’s Ceremony/Lap around the track.

From 8 to 8:15 p.m., there will be a Cartesian Academy dance. Basket raffle winners will be announced at 8:45.

The relay will close with the Luminara Ceremony and “Fight Back” program at 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., respectively.
