Enhanced lighting may win out over cameras to increase safety inside the tunnel under Route 248.
Bowmanstown Borough Council once again debated the merits of both safety features at Tuesday’s meeting.
Councilman Rob Moyer said the whole purpose of cameras is safety, but it’s a question of the monthly cost.
Moyer said he believes a one-time cost of better lighting would be more advantageous in terms of safety and to stop people from camping out inside the tunnel.
He added that for the residents who use the tunnel, it merely comes down to their safety.
“Maybe lights are the better way to go,” Moyer suggested.
At last month’s workshop, borough council members discussed possibly putting better lighting in the tunnel as a deterrent.
Council said the borough would need to provide electric to the tunnel, and Blue Ridge Communications would install the cameras.
Putting security cameras in the tunnel would require electric and internet access.
Council then inquired with Blue Ridge Communications on the cost of internet access in the tunnel.
In March 2022, a mural in the tunnel was vandalized and graffiti had returned under the tunnel where the Bowmanstown Area Residents Connected hung the mural.
