Palmerton tables quilt event request for next year

A request to hold a quilting event next year in Palmerton has been put off until borough officials see how the inaugural event fares this spring.

Borough council on a 6-0 vote Wednesday tabled a use request for the Airing of the Quilts - Palmerton to utilize the borough park/town/lots on May 3, 2025.

“We want to see how this year’s event goes,” Councilman Andrew Hollywood said as the impetus for council’s decision to table next year’s event.

Council President Terry Costenbader was absent.

The inaugural Airing of the Quilts event is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 11 in downtown Palmerton.

Judy Borger, along with Cindy Mengel-Smith, owner of the Quilted Crow, shared their vision for this year’s event with borough council in August.

Borger told council at that time that she, Mengel-Smith, and a few other friends have been meeting and getting things organized.

She said the idea came from the former Airing of the Quilts event that had been held in Tunkhannock, and added it would essentially be a big quilt show.

Borger added the idea is to have the quilts outside and inside businesses all up and down Delaware Avenue, as well as some in the park.

She said there will be entertainment in the park’s bandstand, and added that a quilt show will be held in the Palmerton Area High School Gym as well that day with speakers in the high school auditorium, quilt-related vendors, and a scavenger hunt (traditional quilts blocks).

Borger said shuttle service will be provided from the high school to the downtown.

She said there would be about 500 quilts in the event.
