Weatherly Borough applied for a nearly $1 million gaming grant for the second phase of a trail linking the borough to the Lehigh Gorge State Park.
Borough council met in special session Wednesday afternoon to approve the resolution for the $995,375 statewide Local Share Account grant for the trail extension, borough manager Harold Pudliner said.
This phase of the trail would allow people to access the 165-mile Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor trail inside the Lehigh Gorge park.
The D&L trail stretches from Bristol, Bucks County, to Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, following an historic transportation route that fueled the Industrial Revolution.
The trail could also one day connect to the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails in Luzerne County, but the primary focus is connecting to the Lehigh Gorge park, Pudliner said.
The borough already applied for an Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization grant for the second phase of the project, which is estimated at $2.5 million, he said.
The borough also received an AMLER grant for the first phase of the trail.
No other business was listed on the agenda for Wednesday’s special meeting, and the borough’s regular council meeting set for Monday has been canceled.
