A grassroots organization has been formed to oppose four truck terminals planned in Kidder Township, one of the group’s organizers announced.
The group, Love Kidder Township, opposes the proposed terminals along a 2.2-mile stretch of Route 940.
The Kidder Planning Commission will consider the plans at its 6 p.m. meeting today in the township offices, #10 Lake Harmony Road.
“Kidder Township residents need to be heard on this issue,” said group organizer Beth Hurley. “We are concerned that the Planning Commission will be asked to issue a conditional approval which will clear the path to development of these truck terminals.”
The new organization is not alone in opposing this proliferation of truck terminals, according to the group.
Save Carbon County, a local environmental group, is also opposing the truck terminals. Save Carbon County President Linda Christman says that the Lehigh River has recently been listed as one of the 10 most endangered rivers in the U.S. and the development of warehouses/truck terminals was cited as the primary source of Lehigh pollution.
“Each of these truck terminals brings acres of impermeable surfaces and run-off of diesel fuel and other pollutants,” Christman said. “We must protect the Lehigh and limit these monster buildings.”
