Nesquehoning sets leaders for 2024

Nesquehoning welcomed two new council members and voted to retain last year’s leadership during its annual reorganization on Tuesday.

David Hawk will again serve as council president, while Mary Fox retains the vice president seat.

Mayor Tom Kattner swore in new council members Paul Kattner and Suzanne Smith, as well as returning council members Bruce Nalesnik and Lois Kuba.

The new members still leave council one member shy of a full board. The vacancy is open to anyone interested in serving a two-year term, which was open after Paul Kattner, who won both a two-year and four-year seat, resigned from the two-year position last month.

Residents willing to fill the vacancy should send a letter of interest to the borough office, 114 W. Catawissa St., by Jan. 19. The final council member will be selected and sworn in during council’s Jan. 24 meeting.

In addition to council seats, the board voted to reappoint attorney Robert Yurchak as the borough solicitor; ARRO Engineering as the borough and sewer engineer; Keystone Engineers as the planning commission and zoning board engineer; John McArdle as the emergency management coordinator and fire marshal; William Brior as the sewage enforcement officer; and Kirk, Summa and Company LLP as the borough auditor.

Council made no motion to reappoint Shawn Quigley as a member of the borough water authority. This now leaves Quigley to serve as a member in the now expired term until the Jan. 24 borough council meeting.

Council voted to advertise the position on the water authority as well and will accept letters of interest until Jan. 19 at the borough office.

No discussion on why Quigley was not reappointed took place.

Nesquehoning’s monthly council meetings will take place at 6 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month except November and December, when it will take place the third Wednesday of the month.

Workshop meetings are scheduled for 6 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month except July, August, November and December, when no workshop will be held.
