Childhood cancer week

One in five children will lose their battle with cancer.

Last week, the Carbon County Commissioners wanted to bring this very scary problem to light by adopting a proclamation naming Oct. 19-25 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Week in the county.Commissioner William O'Gurek said the reason for the proclamation is to call attention to the "courage, bravery and strength of the young children who are the victims of cancer.""We all know some personal stories and have some close-to-home stories about how this dreaded disease touches the lives of children and their families and friends," he said. The proclamation states that cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children between infancy and age 15."This tragic disease is detected in more than 15,000 of our country's young people each and every year. ... Many infants, children and teens will suffer from long-term effects of comprehensive treatment, including secondary cancers."The proclamation continues, speaking about the American Cancer Fund for Children and Kids Center Connection, which provides vital patient psychosocial services to children undergoing treatment, as well as celebrations of a child's determination to fight the battle against cancer."Therefore, be it resolved, the members of the Board of Commissioners of Carbon County wish to call attention to the bravery, courage and strength of these young children (and) recognize the efforts of the organizations who help to make the quality of their lives better."
