Blue Mountain Health System will offer a program on Parkinson's Disease from 6-7 p.m. Sept. 23, in the ground-floor community room at the Gnaden Huetten campus, 211 N. 12th St., Lehighton.
Parkinson's disease, which mostly affects older people but can even occur in younger adults, results from the gradual degeneration of nerve cells in the portion of the midbrain that controls body movements. The first signs are likely to be barely noticeable a feeling of weakness or stiffness in one limb, or a fine trembling of one hand when it is at rest. Eventually, the shaking (tremor) worsens and spreads, muscles become stiffer, movements slow down, and balance and coordination deteriorate. The cause is unknown, and although there is presently no cure, there are treatment options such as medication and surgery to manage its symptomsLearn the causes, symptoms, early signs, diagnosis, treatment and how to cope.
