Coaldale holds the line on property taxes

Coaldale is holding the line on property taxes.

During Tuesday’s regular monthly meeting, borough council adopted the municipality’s 2024 budget with a balanced plan of $1,548,261 in projected expenditures and revenues.

Total millage stands at 27.4 mills.

The budget passed unanimously with no discussion, except for an inquiry from council President Claire Remington to borough treasurer Lacey Gonzalez.

“The question everyone will ask is whether there will be a tax increase,” she said.

“No. There won’t be,” Gonzalez answered. “There will not be a millage increase this year.”

Council members Angela Krapf and Ken Hankey Jr. did not attend the meeting.

In another matter, Councilman Francis Hutta said emergency repairs were needed on a portion of road near the intersection of Second and High streets.

A sinkhole opened on the street Monday evening, he said.

The hole measured 8- by 8-feet and was caused by an incorrect sewer line replacement years ago.

“It actually settled because whoever put the line in, they didn’t compact it properly,” Hutta said.

Adding to the problem, he said, was deteriorating concrete.

“They used a real weak mix of concrete,” he said. “The concrete is deteriorating underneath and crumbling, so it’s actually starting to settle now.”

While the sinkhole has been filled, Hutta said the stretch of road will need to be repaired.

“It’s all starting to settle,” he said.

Hutta said there are no discrepancies in the sewer line, “it was just the way it was backfilled.”

He said the borough should keep a check on the area, and will need to fix the issue. He’s hoping that the work can be undertaken in the spring.
