Mahoning discusses traffic concerns

Jim Thorpe and Lehighton weren’t the only municipalities affected by the massive traffic jam the last weekend of October.

Mahoning Township was inconvenienced as well, as discussed briefly at Wednesday’s board of supervisors meeting.

Record-breaking crowds flocked to Jim Thorpe for the final weekend of the town’s annual Fall Foliage Festival.

That didn’t get lost on Supervisor Deb McGowan, who voiced her frustration with the situation.

“We had parking all the way up the mountain,” McGowan said. “It was a catastrophe.”

Jim Thorpe developer Jake Arner said he was stuck in the traffic and “Something should be done.”

McGowan said that the Lehighton Witches’ Market was held the same day, as was Jim Thorpe’s annual Halloween Parade.

“We had a million people in Jim Thorpe, 50,000 people in Lehighton,” she said. “It’s sad to see Lehighton being (cut off) because Jim Thorpe is such a tourist attraction.”

Arner, president of Awesome View Properties, Inc., has received multiple time extensions for his proposed Sierra Vista planned residential development in the township.

He again received one on Wednesday from township supervisors, this time to March 24. Arner has planned residential development in Mahoning and Jim Thorpe.

Sierra Vista Estates has 104 units on Flagstaff Road next to the Flagstaff ballroom and has been approved as a residential development in the township.

Canyon Rim Estates, Arner’s residential development in Jim Thorpe, has 270 units and was approved for short-term rentals, a winery, a tram and a camping facility.

In April, Arner told the board that Berks Homes was interested in joining him and wants to see trams go through.

Arner said there were three possibilities: One is Kemmerer Park, another is the railroad’s property, and another is property at High Street and Race Street.

In March, Arner asked supervisors if short-term rentals would be allowed on his property next to the Flagstaff ballroom.
