A Summit Hill man is facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol after he crashed his tractor trailer into a sign for the Dollar General store at the former Jamesway Plaza on East Broad Street in Tamaqua, Tamaqua police said.
Police said a witness saw the tractor trailer then travel down a grass embankment following the 8:41 p.m. crash on Oct. 24. The driver, Steven Medina-Medina, 28, damaged the tractor trailer, along with Greenzweig Insurance and Dollar General properties.
When police arrived, Medina-Medina was operating the tractor trailer in the parking lot area, and the witness believed he was trying to leave the scene.
Police approached Medina-Medina and asked him to exit the vehicle. Officers and noticed he was swaying, speaking with a “whistle” sound, and had slurred speech and glossy eyes.
Officers said Medina-Medina failed field sobriety tests, and was taken into custody for driving under the influence.
Medina-Medina permitted police to search the cab, where they found a bottle of gin near the passenger side floorboards.
He was charged with driving under the influence, commercial vehicle drivers prohibited from operating with any alcohol in system, reckless driving, accidents involving damage to unattended property and careless driving.
