Carbon County is backing a local organization in its quest at securing funds to help complete two projects at its location in Lehighton.
On Thursday, the board of commissioners adopted a resolution to submit an application to the Commonwealth Financing Authority for a Monroe County Local Share Account grant in the amount of $73,581. The money, if secured, would be used for electrical renovations and the parking lot rehabilitation at the Lehighton American Legion Post 314.
“The legion is one of the central locations in the county for veterans,” Commissioner Rocky Ahner said, noting that the veterans food bank is run out of that post, several events are held there and more. “Anything that we can do here at the county to help them out, I think that’s very fitting.”
The Lehighton American Legion has had several issues over the last few months with its ceiling inside the main hall coming down.
Ahner said he believed the legion got some donations for the renovation of the ceiling and is hoping to complete that project in October.
Right now, Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said that the legion has got all the insulation up and is covering the ceiling with plastic so the room could be used in the time being.
Several people, including businesses and contractors, have banded together since the ceiling came down to donate time, talent and money to repair the damage.
“It’s a community project,” Ahner said.
