3 inches of rain dumped on area
About 3 inches of rain fell over the region this weekend, with some schools on delays this morning.
Lehighton Area School District was on a two-hour delay today due to a power outage in the borough due to storm issues.
CCTI was also delayed two hours and there were no kindergarten classes.
While the area received a good amount of precipitation, things could have been much worse, said Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.
“But, damage wise, it was minimal,” Kines said. “I’m sure there was some basements that had issues, but in the overall scheme of things, it looks like we escaped it without too big of a trouble.”
Fortunately, Kines said the winds weren’t excessive, because had they have been, that could have caused issues because the ground is wet.
“The good news is the heaviest rain seems to be done with,” he said. “That’s not to say there’s not going to be any more rain, but it should be less than a quarter-of-an inch.”
Still, Kines said he believes that during the nighttime hours tonight, we may have to contend with some drizzle.
“Hopefully tomorrow, the rain totally has left,” he said. “Sunshine is going to be hard to come by, but at least it should be dry, and hopefully by Wednesday, we do see some sunshine and with that temperatures should respond by getting well up into the 60s.”
Kines said that normally this time of year, we should see high temps up around 70.
“The last few days, it’s been falling short of that, but hopefully by midweek we’re getting up close to that,” he said. “Once this rain gets out of our hair, it looks like we’re getting into a generally dry weather pattern, (as) Wednesday through Sunday, it will be dry or mainly dry.”
So much so, that Kines believes we’ll be headed into a dryer and warmer weather pattern, and added that next week we could see temperatures well above normal.
Despite the heavy rains, Kines said the Lehigh River appears to be holding its own.
“The river, looking at gages, seems to be doing fine, still well below flood stage by a few feet,” he said. “We had a lot of rain, but it wasn’t enough to cause any flooding; maybe some of the smaller streams and creeks, but as far as the larger rivers, (they) seem to be fine.”
