Tamaqua Area School District directors have done all they can to preserve the scheduled May 30 graduation day.

The rest is in the not-to-be-trusted hands of Mother Nature.During a board meeting Tuesday, directors again modified the school calendar. Snow makeup days are scheduled for April 17, 21, 22 and 23. On April 18, Good Friday, school will be closed but teachers will attend as an Act 80 day. After the meeting Superintendent Carol Makuta explained that an Act 80 day can be used as a snow make up day, as long as students receive the required number of instructional hours.Hours of instruction for students must total 990 hours for secondary students, 900 hours for elementary students and 450 hours for kindergarten students.Even some days when only teachers report for professional development known as Act 80 days can count toward the 180-day requirement as long the state requirement for hours of instruction is met.
