Tamaqua will move graduation
Last Thursday's school cancellation snow day was the final one the Tamaqua Area School District could absorb into the planned school calendar.
Graduation day for the seniors, planned for Friday, May 30, along with its traditional all-night party, will have to be changed."It's the first time in 20 years that I can remember having snow days that affected graduation," said Superintendent Carol Makuta. "We had one more day we could use, and we had to use that Thursday."With Friday's cancellation of classes, Makuta said she'll meet with senior class advisor Roseann Weinrich, and also with seniors and parents, to discuss the best fix for graduation. By state law, school districts can't take measures such as scheduling a Saturday school day unless 180 days of education can't be completed by the end of June. The district's school board met Feb. 11 and approved changes to the school calendar based on snow days to that date. Scheduled snow makeup days were scheduled for Feb. 17, April 22 and April 23. April 21 is a snow makeup day for elementary students only. Any additional snow makeup days will begin to chip away at June.In other action the board:Thanked Patricia Clifford, representing the West Penn Elementary School PTO, for their donation of 11 iPads. The organization raised about $4,000 to purchase them. The board recognized the elementary school students of the month: Logan Sabol, Rush Elementary; Theodore Ross, Sara Kulp and Eileen Lusch, West Penn Elementary; and Eva Snyder, Tamaqua Elementary.Updated an existing school policy regarding the distribution of materials in school, by nonschool organizations, groups or individuals. Prohibited in the existing policy were materials which are libelous, defamatory, obscene, lewd, vulgar or profane, or materials that violated federal, state or local laws, or district policy. The board added language to prohibit distribution of materials which are political or primarily commercial in nature. The next meeting of the Tamaqua Area School Board, originally scheduled for Feb. 18, has been postponed until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, in the Tamaqua Area Middle School large group instruction room.
